Physical Education

What PE looks like at Staverton

  • Physical Education at Staverton aims to engage children with being physically active and living a healthy lifestyle for now and in the future. Children will develop an eagerness to participate and demonstrate highly positive attitudes to skill acquisition and development, competitive situations and leading and organising within lessons.
  • All year groups will learn and practise relevant and transferrable skills across a range of different sports and build on these skills each year. This includes a range of invasion games, gymnastics and dance every year.
  • We use the RealPe scheme of work to support our teaching of PE.
  • Swimming is taught in Year 3/4.
  • Throughout the school year, every child will receive specialist sports coaching (through Up and Under) to broaden their knowledge, understanding and skills within different sports. This also provides additional wider opportunities to experience and take part in activities they may not otherwise encounter.

We are experts in PE because:

  • We have a keen interest in PE and are willing to participate eagerly in every lesson with highly positive attitudes.
  • We acquire new knowledge and skills exceptionally well and develop an in-depth understanding of PE.
  • We are willing to practise skills in a wide range of different activities and situations, alone, in small groups and in teams and to apply these skills in chosen activities to achieve exceptionally high levels of performance.
  • We are physically active for sustained periods of time.
  • We take the initiative and become excellent young leaders, organising and officiating, and evaluating what needs to be done to improve, and motivating and instilling excellent sporting attitudes in others.
  • We use our imagination and creativity in techniques, tactics and choreography.
  • We are able to swim at least 25 metres before the end of Year 6 and know how to remain safe in and around water.

PE outside of the classroom

As a school, we take ensure that all children are offered a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities. This varies from term to term (please as the school office for our current list). Our sports clubs are run in collaboration with Active Trowbridge to ensure specialist teaching were necessary.

As a school, we also feel that giving the children an opportunity to compete is very important. We take part in sports competitions run by our local collaborative schools and have also taken part in dance competitions involving schools from a wider area.
